Ingredients for the pizza sauce in glass bowls and a serving tray on a wood table. Black and white labels have been added to name each ingredient.
  • Tomatoes: While fresh tomatoes in the summer are perfect, 99% of the time I use the peeled canned tomatoes from the can. I love the consistency of quality they have, not to mention the minimal ingredients. Cento and Trader Joe’s make my two favorite brands.
  • Herbs and Spices: A combination of basil, parsley, oregano, and onion powder make up the base. If you are not sensitive to spicy foods, adding red pepper flakes is really amazing. Add this to taste.
  • Olive Oil and Garlic: You can’t have pizza sauce without it! Add 3 or 4 cloves, or however many your heart tells you.
  • Brown Sugar: Most recipes call for a bit of sweet to counter the acidity of the tomatoes. I made this with brown sugar one time and never looked back. The touch of molasses you can’t taste overtly but it makes you wonder what changed to make the sauce taste so good.
  • Orange Juice: This is an optional ingredient, but I typically like to add a splash of orange juice to a lot of my tomato based recipes. I just think it adds a little extra pizazz to the flavor!

Instructions

Making this sauce is really easy and done in only two steps!

First up: Mix the sauce together

In a blender or food processor, blend all the ingredients together until smooth.

A plastic blender is on a wood table filled with the blended together pizza sauce.

Second: Cook it down on the stove top.

Transfer the sauce to a medium sauce pot and let it come to a simmer over medium heat. Make sure you stir this frequently. It will cook down over 20 or so minutes. Use immediately or freeze to use later.

How to Store

This sauce freezes fantastically! I always made a double batch of sauce and store the extra in 1 cup containers in the freezer to use anytime I make pizza or need a good tomato dipping sauce.

Fridge: Store any extra sauce in an airtight container and use within 3 to 5 days.

Freezer: Let the sauce cool completely and then store in freezer safe containers. Keeps well for up to 4 months. Make sure to leave a little extra room at the top of any container you use as pizza sauce will expand as it freezes.
